The skin is our protective shell and is our contact with the outside world

The skin is close to our inner state and sometimes becomes a kind of symbol, which leads the mark of our suffering, signs of somatopsychic or psychosomatic disorders: disorders that affect the mind and influencing the body or that affect the body and influencing the mind, in a connection that is always very close.

The skin is our protective shell and is our contact with the outside world. Structure of boundary between self and non self, separates and unites, and more than any other part of the body is implicated in the events psycho-emotional of the individual .

Even in everyday life we can see the profound links between psyche and skin: the changes of physiological skin actually accompany the emotional states like anger, fear, shame, anxiety. Even minor changes, such the heat or sweating of the hands, may be an important sign of emotional experience, and be part of the non-verbal communication.

We must not be surprised if many dermatological diseases, in whole or in part, may be related to the presence of psychological conflicts that just through the skin can express themselves and can be externalized. These are discomforts that we feel like physical, instead represent a signal that comes from psyche: the body is just a way to make them known.

The experts believe that certain skin diseases such as psoriasis, are related to deep psychological disturbances, including major mental illnesses. But do not serve to go so far to understand that an eczema or a itching may reveal an intolerance. For example, the itching seems to be a resistance to something, or to the fact that we are not used to express our aggressiveness.

Urticaria often is a psychosomatic disease
Urticaria often is a psychosomatic disease

Psychosomatic Skin Disorder

The dermatologists have always considered the psychic factor as a cofactor of many skin diseases, is common in fact finding an emotional component in most skin diseases. In some of these that component is more evident, such as in the following cases:

  • Contact dermatitis and urticaria: they can be triggered by a unpleasant relation against external factors with which we are forced to stay in touch. Could be an environment of life or work, or family members or people with whom we are forced to interact but that irritate us. They may express the constriction to live some emotional situations contrasting with our character, our aspirations, our affections. Or may express a difficulty of contact with someone or with the environment, or with something that we must tap: a part of our lives, a relation.

  • Atopic Dermatitis: the atopic dermatitis begins in most cases in infants during the first months of life. This disease may continue in the adult with manifestations on the folds of the arms , on posterior regions of knee and back of hands. All these symptoms may recur or worsen during stress and some psychological conflicts. It seems to be important the relationship with mother and significant others in general. Atopic dermatitis may be an expression of aggressiveness directed toward us, rather than against external targets.

  • Acne: Are known the somatopsychic components to the acne, which can seriously affect the development of the personality of the young. But acne can also be a manifestation of the skin used to relieve anxiety: the acne may becomes an excuse for reducing opportunities, for someone very anxiety-producing, to meeting with others. The disappearance of acne lesions, obtained with the various therapies, may create significant difficulties in adjusting to new situations.

  • Psoriasis: may express a desire to avoid the problems of life and the difficulties of relationships.

It is important listening to the skin, because it speaks so much of our emotions.
It is important listening to the skin, because it speaks so much of our emotions.

Listen the skin

So it is important listening to the skin, because it speaks so much of our emotions. In fact under the influence of hypnosis or relaxation states, many skin diseases heal and many diseases heal with placebo instead of drugs.

If you have a skin problems, wardship, follow the advice of your doctor, but start thinking about this problem in another way: as a friend, a signal of something that, maybe, you have to be able to understand it better.

So true Fuscia!

I think emotions are the result of [and contribute to] diseases, cancers, mental health issues, attitude... Skin disorders are just one gauge to alert us to whats really going on inside.

Fantastic article, up/useful.

Many disorders have among their causes and then among their results the emotions. Body and mind are closely linked and this is fascinating!

Stress hurts us in many ways. And we are too under stress! We must learn to live in contact with our emotions and to relax.

Hi Fuscia, I am glad you wrote this hub just at the time that my body is going through the first few months of "The Change of Life", and I noticed that my temperature gauge in my skin is now linked with atopic occurrences- rashes that only flare up into rage at certain times of day or night. It is good to be informed, and I then don't feel as anxious anymore about "the itch"!

Very true I'v known a few people who suffer from bad skin disorders and there personal lives were all very stressful and chaotic. Family situations do make things worse to I'v seen this too many times, plus clearing things up has cleared up the skin too in close family members of mine. I myself have light adult acne, that has always flared up when overly stressed or in a hardship personally of any kind. All the members of my family are sensitive this way, so I know what you say to be very true here. Thanks it is always healing to talk things out, or write them too. Voted you up!

Auto-immune diseases have come up 'cause of the various problems man suffers and is unable to take it out of the system. Eventually stress can hit us in many ways..thus affecting our health, mind and body.

fucsia profile image

fucsia Hub Author 13 months ago

Ruchira - Thanks for reading and commenting. It is difficult determined if a disorder is caused by an organic or mental unbalance, but surely these both aspects are mutually reinforcing. Stress ( here for stress I mean also fears, constrains, unhappiness ) is our major desease.

This is such an interesting approach to skin disorders. I agree that our mental health can affect our physical health in many ways. If we don't feel good on the inside, it's hard to look good on the outside.

Hi Fucsia

I never thought of my skin being my bark. And even that could have an interesting double meaning!

Thanks for the informative hub. Some really good stuff here. I believe that everything in our body is a metaphor for our life. I have a chapter in my book entitled, "Know Your Precious Body."

I was surprised last night when I looked into a mirror that magnified my skin like ten times and I saw how pleasant and soft my facial skin was. I thought to myself, Wow, even the skin on my face shows I am really living my life. I have been sober since September 2010, in relationships with people who I know and believe really love me and I love them. I am not perfect, but somewhat conscious about eating well and avoiding "poisons" in my food.

It was good to see my bark in such good shape! A pleasant and grateful surprise.

Thanks again for informative hub

Oh, I agree completely with the "manifestation of acne is a way of relieving anxiety" part of this hub! I notice that sometimes when important or stressful events are coming up, that I get a pimple somewhere. It's annoying but eh, what can we do but inform ourselves? Awesome hub! Really creative topic
