Writing is a way to know myself and learn more about the world, it is a way to know which path I must follow and how to follow it, to understand what are my true values and how to live in agreement with them.
Why choose seasonal products
Today we can choose to eat all types of fruits and vegetables we want, whatever the season and from any provenance. In fact, some products, such as tomatoes, lettuce, apples, grapes, are available on supermarket shelves all the year long.
Only 50 years ago the things were not so and the products for sale followed their natural season.
Instead today we can have a continuity of supply due to the following factors:
-
The creation of new early and late varieties : the research has created new varieties of plants which prolongs the time of cultivation.
-
The cultivation in protected places: the cultivation in greenhouses has extended the time of cultivation becouse the plants are protected from the elements and, if these structures are heated, allow the growth of vegetables out of season.
-
Preservation techniques: the best known is refrigeration: the low temperature slows the plant degeneration. There is also the possibility to control the gases present in the places of storage, subtracting oxygen and replacing it with inert gases, in order to slow down the maturation of plants. Furthermore the plants are chemically treated against mold.
-
The modernization of transport: now you can move goods faster and in refrigerated transportation. Thus we find in our stores products from countries where they cost less or where the harvesting coincides with our winter.
Follow the season and eat food from natural production is important and healty to us. Let us see why:
-
The nature in every season offers us the best food, not only to feed but also to meet the conditions of the moment. In the cold months we have compact and sulphurous vegetables (cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, etc..), and in the warm months fruit and vegetables that protect us from high temperatures.
-
Plants of the season have a better nutritional value and a taste, smell and color richer.
-
Fruits and vegetables in greenhouses, because of forced cultivation, contained high amounts of nitrates, which in our body become toxic nitrite.
-
The accelerated growth cycle makes plants more vulnerable, thus easy prey for pests and diseases that require treatment with pesticide of wich the residues persist even after the harvest and those foods are treated with chemical preservatives.
-
The long-distance transport involves high energy costs and CO2 emissions are harmful to the environment. Buying seasonal produce is therefore an ecological choice and a way to save money.
-
It is important to respect the times of abstinence, which coincide with those of seasonal production, to not facilitate the emergence of food allergies. Interrupt for example during the winter and the spring the consumption of tomatoes and eggplant, stop also the intake of allergens present in these vegetables, avoiding the risk of dangerous intolerance.
Calendar of seasonal products. Seasonality chart
It is clear that the non-seasonal products are inevitably of lower quality, less healthy and anti-ecological. So is better not to use them or use only occasionally, preferring organic foods that, just because are biological, respect the natural seasonality and are in harmony with our natural and seasonal needs.
Some of my pages about nutrition.....
- Kamut: Good for your health
Kamut wheat is an ancestor of modern wheat. It has been discovered thousands of years ago in the region located between Egypt and Mesopotamia. From the nutritional point of view and for its taste, Kamut is an excellent idea... But.... - The Natural Nutrition
The idea of dieting makes us feel caged. But if we learn to follow our instincts and listen to our bodies we would not need a diet. We can find our ideal weight alone, without suffering, without diet, without count calories. - Meat and diseases
Meat, particularly if taken in excessive, can be very harmful to our health . The high-protein food produces so much nitrogen that our body can not use and that overloaded the kidneys, the meat also contain saturated fat and cholesterol. - Why choose do not eat animals
A very important question is if a nutrition without animal products may be sufficient to provide the necessary quantity and quality of protein. Many of us think is important to eat meat every day since childhood, but this is a commonplace. - A healthy diet may save our environment
In this page I have collected some data I find in my searches on the Internet. I hope that may sensitize as many people as possible on the health of our environment, seriously endangered. - Food and male infertility
The male sterility in industrialized countries is in worrying increase. The causes are many, among them some are due to environmental and behavioral, some of which may be changed to increase fertility. - A salad for your health
A salad is a light and healthy choice for a fast lunch or a party with friends. A salad is a friend of your health and your beauty. On this page I have collected some of the vegetables that can be used raw and their properties. Choose a salad!

I am totally with you on this! Many sorts of food travel around the world just so we shall be able too eat the things we want. But sometimes I do not know the names of the fruit in the shops or how they are supposed to be eaten! They look very beautiful and exotic but I dont need them really! And I know they have been transported a long way so I do not want to buy them anyway. Thanks for a great hub, with imoportant information! I am glad I met you!
I agree with you and I think this is an excellent hub. I think it makes perfect sense to eat what is in season as it is bound to be healthier.
You raised an interesting point and I totally agree with you. These days, fruits from the supermarket taste like cupboard--I suspect from tampering with nature. Thanks for sharing.
I agree on the seasonal health aspect of food. I travel to many places and the first thing I do is have local grown fruit etc sometimes just off the tree and I found it gives me a bit of protection from common ailments. Nice hub thanks
Always better to stick with what is in season.
Thanks for the hub.
Excellent hub - as with all the other hubs I've read, I'll be referring back to this for ideas on seasonal products. Thanks for sharing this,
I have added an extra snake tattoo just for you ; )
A very good article on seasonal produce and the benefits of selecting fresh. I enjoy all of your hubs and put them to practice. Beauty begins from the inside out, as does a healthy body and strong immune system. Thank you fucsia!
I wholeheartedly agree with you in promoting the choice of seasonal products. They have better nutrients if they follow the natural rhythm of nature.
Great hub!
